“How do I point my domain from GoDaddy to a name server?”

Okay, So you’ve purchased a new domain name, now what? Well if you’re someone who is going for the least expensive way to start your online business, then you’ve decided to use Godaddy for your registrar and for buying domain names. You’ve also decided to use Hostgator for your web hosting. But how do you connect your domain name at Godaddy to your new web site at Hostgator? Today we will review how some of this works and show you how change your DNS settings at Godaddy so Hostgator can serve up a web page for you.

Domain Registrar
Godaddy is a domain name registrar. They are a company that manages domains names that are used on the Internet. They do other things but really the best thing they do is domain names, and they do it great. When you buy a domain name you also usually will get some sort of DNS hosting as part of the service for using that registrar. But what is DNS? I’m glad you asked :-)

DNS (Domain Naming Systen)
So to start telling what DNS is, I need to make sure you understand a little bit about how the Internet works and how DNS works.

All computers that are on the Internet have an address. Just like your home has a mailing address and zip code to allow the post office to deliver mail, computers have an address too. This address is called an IP address. IP (like all things in the techy world is an acronym that stands for Internet Protocol) IP addresses are a long series of numbers. Like the way the post office uses zip codes to route your mail across the country, computers use IP addresses to route your data across the Internet.

For us humans, its not too easy for us to remember long strings of numbers. That’s why we use names instead. Back to our post office example, my friend Bob lives on Elm Street, in Chicago. I can remember Bob’s address easily because of its name. The post office however uses the zip code to find Bob.

The internet is the same way. Human use names and computers use numbers to find what we’re looking for. For example, google.com is the name of the search engine Google. When you want to find Google you type in the name (http://www.google.com) in your browser window. That name, google.com is actually an IP address (a long series of numbers) that is used to route your request across the internet.

To do all of this conversion from names to numbers, computer use a system called DNS or the Domain Naming System. DNS servers all over the world take names and convert them to ip addresses. As you know, a domain name like google.com is simply a name given to the physical address of Google’s web servers on the internet.

After you buy your domain name, the first thing you want to do is change the DNS setting to point to your hosting provider. To do this, simply log in to your Godaddy account and click on Manage Domains.  From here you will be given a list a domain names that are currently associated with your account.

From the list of domain names click on the domain name you wish to change. This will take you to the domain name properties page.  Here you can change your contact details along with the dns server settings.

In the lower left hand side of the page you will see a link called Manage DNS.  Click on this link to reveal a pop-up window with several options for changing your DNS.  The option we are interested in is the “I have specific name servers for my domain”.  Select this option and several text boxes will appear that allow you to input your DNS server settings. Don’t worry if you only have two name servers and there are four boxes.  Just add one server name to each text box and leave the other blank.

When you first signed up for your hosting account Hostgator or Blue host would have sent you a welcome email. This email should have included your user name, password and your DNS server names.  You need to copy the DNS server names from this email and input them into the DNS text boxes on your Godaddy domain account page.

After you add your DNS servers, select okay and your done. One finaly word about DNS servers.  They are sometimes slow to propagate their changes throughout the Internet.  DNS changes can take up to three hours, sometime up to 3 days or longer.  It’s usually doesn’t take that long, but every once in a while is does.  So if you’ve made changes to your DNS and you don’t see things updating, be patient.  If after several hours, things still don’t look good, then give Godaddy tech support a call.  They are very helpful with domain name support.

Hopefully this article has helped.  If you have any questions about how DNS works or need help finding a recommend web hosting provider, leave a comment below.

If you’re thinking about getting your own website, one of the first things you’re gong to need is to register a domain name. But how do you buy a domain name and where is the best place to get a domain name. Well, in today’s post we are going to review some great places to get a domain name and how you register a domain.

To buy a domain name you need to find a good domain registrar. There are a lot of companies on the web that will sell you a domain name but the prices vary widely.  What we are going to focus on is how to get a domain for the cheapest price and where to get one at these great prices.

There are two places I recommend to get your domains from. One is NameCheap.com and the other is Godaddy.com.  Both are excellent registrars and both a very inexpensive.  They both however have their own pro’s and cons.  For example, Godaddy is the cheapest of the two but NameCheap.com has some great features.

Here’s how the two compare:

NameCheap.com

Namecheap.com - Cheap domain name registration, renewal and transfers - Free SSL Certificates - Web Hosting

NameCheap.com has a very fast web site, a very clean web page that easy to understand, and includes some nice features when you purchase your domain name. One of the best features that NameCheap.com includes is a service called WhoIs GuardWhoIs Guard is a privacy service that will protect your personal information from being displayed whenever someone wants information regarding your domain name.

Information about domain names and who owns them are kept in a giant database. This information can include the owners name, physical address, as well as contact information such as email and sometimes phone number. This information is publicly available to anyone who wants to know it.   What domain privacy does is allows you to protect your personal information from being displayed.  This is very useful in the event that you post something on your website that someone else doesn’t like and wants to know where you live to further discuss the matter.  All they have to do is look up who owns the domain, and they will find your home address and could come knocking on your door.  This might not be a good situation.

Godaddy.com

GoDaddy on the other hand has THE best prices that you can find on the internet for domain names. Most domains are only $7.49 a year (usually with a coupon code).  Godaddy also offers domain privacy but this is usually about $4.00 extra per year.   What I don’t like about Godaddy is that their website is a bit slower, more confusing and seems to have a lot of errors or problems loading from time to time.

The other thing I don’t like about Godaddy is that they will try to sell you all kinds of stuff on the way to the shopping cart. It’s really a pain and none of their other features, in my opinion, are very good.

“I used to use their web hosting and it was horrible!”

Godaddy is a great place to get your domains and they do a fantastic job at being a domain registrar. If you do get your domains with Godaddy,  just stick with the domain and don’t buy into any of their upsells. They are over priced and low quality.

So in summary, GoDaddy is the cheapest for registering a domain name,  just stay away from the upsells. If your looking for privacy, NameCheap.com will set you up with that free of charge for your first year. Both are great domain name registrars and I highly recommend both if you are wanting to register a domain name.

When you talk about top rated web hosting providers, some names like Hostmonster, Hostgator and Bluehost can just NOT be shrugged off. Inmotion and iPage are two other credible names in the niche. Put together, these would form the top 5 rated in the niche of web hosting service providers, in no particular order. And these being independent reviews, mostly based on customer reports, the credibility shouldn’t be questioned at all.

One look at the main reasons why these web hosting companies are rated at the top of the pole and why you should know the answers. For example, most of these top companies would offer unlimited space and unlimited traffic, all at a single digit price per month. The only exception to most Top 10 lists would be Godaddy that offers its plans starting at $12.65 per month, but even this web hosting service provider scores high points due to its customer base.

Get Bonuses for Signing Up But Stick to the Basics When Deciding

Most of these websites obviously rank high in their offerings but one place where each one of them scores high is their bonus offerings. Now, a lot of web hosting service providers allow some kind of a bonus to be provided to the customers, but with these companies, you would find the bonuses being of high value to the customers. For example, Bluehost allows free domain for forever and also allows the customers to host unlimited number of domains off their web space. Hostmonster, in addition to these bonuses, also provides customers with a $75 Bonus, which would help customers in their Internet Marketing efforts.

The point we wish to say is – The basic services do eventually matter for any web hosting service provider, but if something clicks for these service providers who have made a name for themselves, it is the bonus offerings too.

Customer Service is Key

Most independent reviews also look into the customer service provided by these hosting service providers to their customers. The high ratings received by these providers, as compared to quite a few other service providers tells us just one thing – They are right on the spot, when it comes to customer service. These top rated web hosting companies don’t compromise on customer support, one bit.

Now that you know what the metrics that go in the rating of top web hosting companies are, one would think you may not have a lot of issues finding a web hosting service provider for your needs. It could be easy for you to go for a company that is on the top of the tree, but do your own research. Investigate into the offerings by the web hosting service providers and make your choice.
